41 St Augustine's Back
William Barrett, author of the first modern history of Bristol lived here. His wife is buried at St Mary Redcliffe church. Barrett uncritically included much of the Rowley ‘sources’, such as Chatterton’s forged chronicles of Bristol, A Discorse on Brystowe, in his book, The History and Antiquities of the city of Bristol, published in 1789, The book was, however, poorly received, thanks to the discrediting almost as soon as it was published that the Rowley manuscripts were forgeries.
Chatterton went to school nearby.
The area of Bristol was redeveloped and the street layout altered in the nineteenth century.
