Broadway was a charming tourist spot attracting many overseas visitors and artists: including Elgar, John Singer Sargent, J. M. Barrie, Vaughan Williams, William Morris and Mary Anderson. Algernon Gissing lived at Smallbrook Cottage, Broadway in 1887, where he wrote his first novel Joy cometh in the Morning (1888), his second Both of this Parish (1889).
