Here, in Christ Church with St Ewen, Robert Southey was baptised. He wrote how he often "stopt with my satchel on my back to see treet, note the Quarter Jacks on them strike". The Quarter Jacks, currently in storage and awaiting repair, were part of an medieval church, demolished in 1786.
